“Kacey Musgraves broke with country music conventions early in her career by fusing contemporary topics with vintage country sounds to represent her millennial viewpoint. Her breakthrough album “Same Trailer Different Park” from 2013, which included singles like “Merry Go ‘Round” and “Follow Your Arrow,” enhanced her skill and made Musgraves a well-known voice in the country music industry. She was one of the few country musicians who could draw in rock fans without playing music with a strong pop influence.
She expanded her musical tastes at the end of the decade to showcase her wide range of lyrical viewpoints. Her highly regarded 2018 album “Golden Hour,” which distinguished out for fusing retro-pop inspirations with evocative modern electronics, was a clear example of this growth. After earning the 2019 Grammy for Album of the Year unexpectedly with “Golden Hour,” Musgraves rose to fame across a variety of genres. In 2021, she achieved even more notoriety with the stylish and depressing sequel, “Star-Crossed.”
Following a well publicized joint effort on Jack Bryan’s 2023 breakthrough hit “I Remember Everything,” Musgraves made a comeback in early 2021 with her own song, “Deeper Well.”
Growing up in Golden City, East Texas, Kacey Musgraves began playing the mandolin at the age of eight and began writing songs soon after. She was creating her own songs and playing the guitar by the age of twelve. She and Alina Tatum worked together to self-release “Little Bit of Texas,” their album, as Texas Two Bits, in 2000. She wrote, sung, and performed all through her teens. She also released many indie albums, such as “Movin’ On” (2002), “Wanted: One Good Cowboy” (2003), and “Kacey Musgraves” (2007), and occasionally made appearances at minor festivals.
Musgraves moved to Austin after finishing high school, where she wrote her own songs and performed in songwriting demos. She took a chance on the national scene and entered the television music competition “Nashville Star,” placing seventh overall but making it to the fifth episode of the fifth season. After gaining recognition from major companies for her independent albums, she signed with Mercury Nashville in 2012. Before the year ended, she released her debut hit, “Merry Go ‘Round,” and went on tour supporting Lady Antebellum. Her highly regarded debut full-length album, “Same Trailer Different,” was released in March 2013 after the song peaked at number ten on the Billboard Country Airplay list.
Co-produced by Shane McAnally, Luke Laird, and Musgraves, “Same Trailer Different Park” debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200 upon its release. It was met with positive reviews and certified gold following the success of two additional excellent tracks, “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Follow Your Arrow.” As a result of “Same Trailer Different Park’s” popularity, Musgraves rose to prominence in the country music industry and raised expectations for her follow-up album, “Pageant Material.” The album’s initial song, “Biscuits,” only made it to number 41 on the Country Airplay list, and “Dime Store Cowgirl” didn’t make it to the top of the charts at all. When the album was released in June 2015, it debuted on the Billboard 200 at number three.
Musgraves released the happy flashback song “A Very Kacey Christmas” in October 2016. She started recording her third original album in 2017. Produced by Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, “Golden Hour” (2018) is more modern than its predecessors, winning over listeners with its sparkling, modern pop and indie stylings. The highly regarded crossover album was the first to win Album of the Year at the 61st Grammy Awards in early 2019 and topped year-end lists for multiple years. She also won prizes for Best Country Song (‘Merry Go ‘Round’) and Best Country Album. After she won, “Rainbow,” which had been the fifth single on “Golden Hour,” was taken out and released as a stand-alone song.
At the end of 2019, Kacey Musgraves made a humorous television special called Kacey Musgraves’ Christmas Show for Amazon Prime. An CD including the audio tracks from the show was also released. ‘The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show’ album peaked at number 120 on the Billboard charts.
Musgraves appeared in multiple cameos in 2020, including The Flaming Lips’ “American Head” and Ruston Kelly’s “Shape & Destroy,” her second album. The couple fell in love while filming Golden Hour and was married in October 2017. They filed for divorce in August 2020, far in advance of Shape & Destroy’s debut. Musgraves went into further detail about her divorce on the upcoming Golden Hour album, Star-Crossed, which was published in September 2021. Perceived as a somber, atmospheric record once more helmed by Grammy-winning associate producers
